Run for Sight 2012 is a charity 5km Blindfold Run jointly organized by Persatuan Glaucoma Malaysia and Save Ones Sight Missions, held in conjunction with World Glaucoma Week 2012. The 2 main objectives of Run for Sight 2012 is to increase the awareness of Glaucoma among Malaysians and to raise funds for the setting up of the country first Glaucoma Community Eye Care Centre to serve the under priviledge Glaucoma patients. The Run promisesd to be a fun filled Blindfolded Run over 5 km in Putrajayawhich is believed to be the first of its kind to be held in Malaysia.Challenges of Mobility in Darkness is the message that the organizers hopes to loudly bring forth to all Malaysians to not take their precious GOD given good eyesight for granted. This message is in line with this years international theme for World Glaucoma Week, Don't let Glaucoma Darken your Life !This theme with itsvarious possible interpretations lendsits admirababily to the development of screening and prevention activities.Glaucoma can darken the patients psychology thru anguish about the future. It can also darken the life of the patients family thru the fearabout their beloved person's sight. Finally it may be most important it cancreate a strong guilt to a Glaucoma patient who has kept the disease secret for whatever reason and learns that a beloved relative, sibling or child have lost vision because of late diagnosis; a strong incentive to push one's relative to get screened !
The organizers earnestly pray and hope that thru this Blindfolded Run experience many will not ever take its eye sight for granted and to regularly go for eye health screening.

Don't Let Glaucoma Darken Your Life

These were the most common causes of blindness around the world in 2002, according to WHO.
Cataracts (47.9%),
Glaucoma (12.3%),
Age-related macular degeneration (8.7%),
Corneal opacity (5.1%), and
Diabetic retinopathy (4.8%),
Childhood blindness (3.9%)
It has been estimated 40 million people worldwide are completey blind. On top of that number, around 124 million people have low vision. Visual impairment is more common in developing countries such as ours due to a lack of early detection for such conditions. 90% of blind people live in the poorest parts of the developing world. Most eye diseases advance gradually and there are no symptoms.

However, 75% of this blindness is treatable and/or preventable.

Save One's Sight Missions Berhad was established to fight unnecessary blindness and other eye diseases through early detection.

Since inception, Save One's Sight has:
carried out 50 cataract operation
screen over 6000 people
Join our fight to raise awareness against these sight-robbing diseases. Blindness is unnecessary and the only way to stop more people falling to its prey is through yearly eye check-up.
